The Roles of the Governing Board

The role of the Governing Board at Hilmarton Primary School.

What is a Board of Governors?

By law, all state schools are required to have a Board of Governors. The general role of the Governors is to oversee the strategic planning and direction of the school rather than be involved in the day to day running. We are responsible for the conduct of the school and to ensure that the education provided, and the way in which the children, staff and parents are treated, are in accordance with the law and the various regulations laid down by the authorities. Our overriding aim is always to work towards a continual improvement in the standards of education enjoyed by our pupils. The role the Board of Governors plays is crucial to pupil and staff morale and the reputation of the school so it is also important that we challenge the school whilst maintaining support, this is often referred to as being a "critical friend".
